Malawi radio faces closure over Cash-gate scandal, management summoned by MACRA

Private owned radio Galaxy FM faces closure following the Sunday’s program which it announced the names of companies which are involved in a Cash-gate scandal’

According to sources, the Ministry of Information issued a closure directive the same day afternoon and its management has been summoned by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on Monday in Blantyre.


This follows some Information Technology experts who have recovered a list of companies which were involved in the looting of money at Capitol Hill.



The list which was deleted by Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) Accounts Assistant Frank Mwaza, has companies owned by top Peoples Party (PP) officials.

Totaling about 50 companies, the total amount of the lost cash on the list is K1 330 000 000.

The document, is in our possession, shows that on September 3, 2013 Mwanza deleted from the computer system O & G Construction LTD, owned by Osward Lutepo and his friends which through cheque number 017496, voucher number O9OPV2001734 cashed K158 784 000.

The company also benefited K28 981 900, K336 482 000 and K220 467 000 through three different cheques, the information which Mwanza also deleted on the same day.

International Procurement Services which is owned by Lutepo and his friends through cheque number 017502 and voucher number O9OPV2001750 got K361 834 000, through cheque number 017503 and voucher number O9OPV2001752 benefited K408 768 000.

The company was also awarded with K240 384 000 through cheque number 017504 and voucher number O9OPV2001753.

Deleted on September 16, 2013 by Geoffrey Sinoya, Khumbo Kachali's Crossmarketing was favoured with K68 576 000 through cheque number 028531 and voucher number O9OPV2001659 and K28 433 000 through cheque number 028532 and voucher number O9OPV2001662.

On the same day, Sinoya trashed Sky Civil Building Contractors owned by Reen Kachere's relative Stan Kachere.

The company took home K91 320 000 through cheque number 028522 and voucher number O9OPV2001669 and through cheque number 028523 and voucher O9OPV2001673 got K71 680 000.

According to an OPC source who pleaded for anonymity, the experts recovered the information from a dack-up saver at the office.

According to the list, National Construction Industry Council was awarded 15 transactions.
