A 36 year old woman died in Mchinji district on Tuesday morning when a tree fell over her when she was fetching firewood at a forest near the boma, Police have confirmed to Malawi News Agency.
Mchinji Police Publicist Moses Nyirenda told Mana the woman identified as Dorothy Patrick of Kapanga Village Traditional Authority (TA) Mavwere in the district met her fate when she went to fetch firewood at Mchinji forest around 10 am when heavy winds blew strongly and uprooted a big tree which fell over her, killing her instantly.
The woman had a two year baby girl strapped on her back, but the baby sustained minor injuries and is being treated at Mchinji District Hospital.
Hospital officials confirmed the woman died due to loss of blood and multiple fractures in her body.
Mchinji district experienced heavy rains coupled with strong winds in the morning of Tuesday but no big damage were caused to buildings and crops as we went to press.
