Central region NTAM chapter to holds theater festival

The Central Region Chapter of the National Theater Association of Malawi (CRC-NTAM) will from next month commence a theater festival.

According to the chapters’ Secretary General Kitchen, the festival is expected to commence o September 8 in Kasungu district.

It will then go to Salima and Dowa districts in October, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe and Mchinji districts in November before the regional finals on December 8.

‘The plays will in both Chichewa and English and will not exceed 30 minutes. Drama groups will be allowed to perform only one play whilst dance troupe shall perform three songs, one from each country’s region,” said Kitchen.

He added, “We decided to come up with the competition because it seems like people are loosing interest in theater. In the central region, apart form the ATEM competition which only targets secondary schools, there is only one or two groups which are active in theater unlike in the southern region.

“We would want to see into it that the central region should also have the equal force as in the southern region. It is high time that people should look at theater with a positive way and the communities
benefiting from it,” he said.

He said the registration for the participation group is K1, 000 per group for those registered with the association and no-members are supposed to pay K3, 000.

The three winning groups at the regional finals will share MK50 000.

“Each district performances 60 percent gate collection shall be shared equally to all participating groups while 20 percent shall go to the regional chapter and the rest to the district committee,” he said.
